Angela C. Richardson explains how setting boundaries, changing negative self-talk, managing stress and using movement to reset can protect your mental wellness as you grow into a healthier version of yourself.

Protect Your Peace: How Mental Wellness Can Strengthen Your Fitness Journey

This week is about protecting your peace.

We've talked a little about mental wellness throughout this journey, but because we are in a season of elevation and transition, I want us to look a little deeper.

As you elevate, everything around you may not be coming with you.

That includes environments, conversations, habits, and sometimes even people who bring negative energy into your space.

As your coach, I want you to understand that protecting your peace isn't selfish.

It's part of taking care of you.

Protect Your Mind

Pay attention to what you're allowing into your mind every day.

What are you listening to?

What are you watching?

Who are you surrounding yourself with?

What are you saying to yourself?

Sometimes the negativity isn't coming from someone else.

It's coming from within.

"I'm not good enough."

"I'm never going to reach my goal."

"My body doesn't look the way I want it to."

"I can't do this."

That negative self-talk can become so familiar that we don't even realize we're doing it.

But I'm challenging you this week to catch those thoughts.

When you hear yourself speaking negatively, stop and reset.

Replace "I can't" with "I'm learning."

Replace "I'm not where I want to be" with "I'm still making progress."

Replace "I don't like what I see" with "I'm taking care of the body I have today."

Your words matter.

Angela C. Richardson explains why walking, biking, swimming, dancing, and other everyday activities can help you stay active, healthy, and consistent—even when you’re away from the gym.

Your Body Feels What Your Mind Carries

When your mind isn't well, your body can feel it.

Stress can affect your energy.

Negative thoughts can affect your motivation.

Emotional overload can make you want to withdraw, overeat, or stop taking care of yourself.

That's why mental wellness belongs in the fitness conversation.

You can't separate the mind from the body.

They're connected.

So when you feel overwhelmed, don't ignore it.

Step away and reset.

Take a walk.

Pray.

Meditate.

Journal.

Take some deep breaths.

Sit quietly.

Give yourself permission to pause.

You don't have to stay in a negative space just because you entered it.

Change Your Environment When You Need To

Sometimes protecting your peace means creating boundaries.

You may have to step away from a conversation.

You may need to spend less time around negativity.

You may have to stop explaining yourself to people who aren't trying to understand you.

And sometimes, you simply need to change your environment.

Don't allow someone else's negative energy to become your emotional home.

You are working too hard on yourself to continually invite things into your space that tear you down.

Protect what you're building.

Move Your Body and Reset

One of my favorite ways to reset is through movement.

When I step into the gym, I'm not only working on my physical body.

I'm giving myself an opportunity to release what's been weighing on me.

Lift the weights.

Walk.

Run.

Stretch.

Move.

Let your body work while your mind begins to clear.

You may walk into the gym feeling frustrated and walk out feeling completely different.

The situation may still be there.

But your mindset has shifted.

Sometimes you don't need to figure everything out in that moment.

You just need to move.

As You Elevate, Protect the New You

We're in a transition period.

We're elevating.

We're evolving.

And that means becoming intentional about what comes with us into our next season.

Ask yourself:

Does this environment support who I'm becoming?

Do these conversations bring me peace or drain me?

Am I speaking to myself with the same encouragement I give other people?

What do I need to release so I can protect my peace?

You don't have to carry everything into your next level.

Some things need to stay behind.

Coach's Challenge

This week, I want you to practice the PAUSE:

P — Pause before reacting.

A — Assess what you're feeling.

U — Understand what is affecting your peace.

S — Step away if you need to.

E — Elevate your mindset and choose your next move.

You don't have to respond to everything.

You don't have to absorb everything.

And you don't have to allow everything into your space.

Reflection

What do I need to protect my peace from right now?

And just as importantly:

What do I need more of to support my mental wellness?

Remember, you're not just working on your body.

You're working on you.

So as you elevate and evolve, protect your mind.

Protect your energy.

Protect your peace.

And keep moving toward the healthiest version of yourself.
