EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — The Police Athletic League helped more than 100 area youth on Saturday Dec. 2, through the annual Holidays with Heroes program formerly known as Shop with a Cop.

In its 13th year, some 120 heroes from 24 different police, fire, EMS and military agencies from Atlantic and Cape May County participated, according to retired Egg Harbor Township Police Department Capt. Hector Tavarez.

"This is our favorite single day event of the year," said Tavarez. "It takes a very dedicated staff and a small army of volunteers to pull this off every year and every year it seems to get better."

Shop with a Cop was part of a nationwide program that paired police officers with children to give them a better Christmas. The program generally helps build positive relationships between officers and the communities they serve and protect.

Approximately 120 Atlantic County and Ocean City children and youth from 104 different families received a hot meal and then the police officers took them shopping for holiday toys.

"We are grateful to our staff, volunteers, heroes and our gracious sponsors that make this event possible every year," Tavarez said. "By the looks on the kid faces we had another great event."
