Summer Strong: Consistency Doesn't Take a Vacation
This Wellness Wednesday column explores how consistency, flexibility, and simple daily habits can help you enjoy summer while staying committed to your health goals.
Summer is finally here. The days are longer, vacations are planned, family cookouts are on the calendar, and many of us are looking forward to slowing down and enjoying the season. But let me ask you something... When your schedule changes, does your wellness routine change too?

For many people, summer becomes the season where healthy habits get put on hold. We tell ourselves, "I'll get back to it when vacation is over," or "I'll start again next Monday." As your coach, I want to challenge you to think differently. Your vacation is a break from work. It shouldn't be a break from taking care of yourself.

Take Your Healthy Habits With You One of the greatest lessons I've learned on my fitness journey is that wellness isn't tied to a location. You don't have to be in your favorite gym. You don't need your normal routine. You simply need to stay committed. I've learned that when I'm traveling or my schedule changes, I don't aim for perfection—I aim for consistency. Maybe that means taking a morning walk before everyone wakes up. Maybe it's using the hotel fitness center. Maybe it's stretching before bed, swimming with the family, or choosing water instead of another sugary drink. Those small choices matter. Consistency isn't about doing everything. It's about doing something.

Vacation Without Guilt Let's be honest. You're probably going to enjoy a slice of cake at the family reunion. You may have ice cream on the Boardwalk. You might enjoy your favorite meal while you're away. And that's okay. One meal doesn't erase months of discipline. One weekend doesn't undo your progress. The key is to enjoy those moments without guilt and return to your healthy habits at your very next opportunity. Don't let one choice turn into one week... or one month. Simply get back on track.

Keep Moving Movement doesn't always have to look like a structured workout. Walk the beach. Go hiking. Ride a bike. Swim with your children or grandchildren. Play volleyball at the park. Dance at the family cookout. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. The goal is simple: Keep your body moving. Every step counts.

Summer Is Part of Your Lifestyle If you've been following this column, you've heard me say it before: This is a lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle doesn't pause because the seasons change. It adapts. You have worked too hard to build these habits. Take them with you. Your wellness journey should fit your life—not the other way around. Coach's Challenge This week, I challenge you to choose one non-negotiable habit you'll keep no matter where summer takes you. Maybe it's: - Walking 30 minutes every day. - Drinking your daily water goal. - Eating a healthy breakfast. - Stretching each morning. - Spending 10 minutes in prayer, meditation, or journaling. Choose one. Protect it. Stay consistent. Because consistency doesn't take a vacation. Neither should your commitment to yourself.

Reflection What healthy habit will I commit to keeping all summer long? Remember... Summer isn't the season to start over. It's the season to prove that wellness has become part of who you are. Have an amazing week, enjoy your summer, and keep showing up for yourself.
