Reset Your Routine: How to Stay Committed to Your Fitness Goals This Fall

New Season, Same Commitment

September is here, and with a new season often comes a new schedule.

Summer slowly comes to an end. Vacations wind down, kids head back to school, work schedules shift, and our days begin to look a little different. With those changes, our wellness routines may need to change too.

But here’s the reminder I want you to hold onto:

Adjust your routine without changing your goals.

You don't have to start over just because your schedule looks different.

Finish Summer Strong: Why Momentum Matters More Than Motivation on Your Wellness Journey
As summer winds down, Angela C. Richardson shares how consistency, resilience, and small daily choices can help you maintain momentum and build lasting wellness habits into August and beyond.

My September Reset

I began September by resetting myself from the summer.

I kept moving all summer. I found ways to stay active, enjoy the outdoors, have fun, and continue working on my wellness. But as September arrived, I realized I had some new goals I wanted to work toward—goals that would challenge me physically and help me continue growing.

So I made some changes.

I went back to lifting heavier and added more running into my September routine.

Why?

Because my goals have changed.

I’m ready to challenge myself physically and see what my body can do. I want to continue building strength, improving my endurance, and becoming stronger than I was before.

And that meant my routine needed to change.

New season. Same commitment to myself.

Your Fall Schedule May Look Different

Maybe your summer workouts were early in the morning because you had more flexibility.

Maybe you were walking outside, going to the beach, taking vacations, or fitting workouts in whenever you could.

Now fall is here, and your schedule may not allow the same flexibility.

That's okay.

Your routine may need to look different, but your commitment doesn't have to.

Maybe you need to move your workouts to the evening.

Maybe three 30-minute workouts fit better than trying to squeeze in an hour.

Maybe you need to return to the gym, create a home workout schedule, or add more strength training.

The key is not to force your summer routine into your fall schedule.

Adjust. Don't quit.

Adjust Your Routine Without Changing Your Goals

This is something I want you to remember throughout your wellness journey:

Your routine is the vehicle. Your goal is the destination.

Sometimes the route has to change.

You may have long-term goals that you're still working toward. You may also have short-term goals that help you get there.

Don't abandon either one simply because life changes.

Instead, ask yourself:

“What do I need to change about my routine so I can continue moving toward my goals?”

If your goal is to get stronger, maybe it's time to increase your weights.

If your goal is to improve endurance, maybe it's time to add running or more cardio.

If your goal is consistency, maybe you need to create a realistic three-day workout schedule.

If your goal is improving your nutrition, maybe fall is the perfect time to get back to meal planning and preparing your meals ahead of time.

The goal can stay the same while the strategy changes.

If It Doesn’t Fit, It Won’t Last: How to Build a Fitness Routine That Works With Your Real Life
Angela C. Richardson explains how flexible structure, realistic scheduling, and consistent habits help turn fitness into a sustainable lifestyle.

Make Your Wellness Fit Your Real Life

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that fitness has to fit into your life—not the other way around.

There will be seasons when you have more time.

There will be seasons when you're extremely busy.

There will be seasons when you need to push harder.

And there will be seasons when your body needs more recovery.

That's why flexibility is so important.

If you only know how to follow one routine, a schedule change can completely throw you off.

But when you learn how to adjust, you can keep moving forward.

Thirty minutes still counts.

Three workouts still count.

A walk still counts.

A modified workout still counts.

Progress doesn't require perfection. It requires you to keep adapting and showing up.

Don't Lose What You Built Over the Summer

You spent the summer building something.

Maybe you built consistency.

Maybe you became more active.

Maybe you gained confidence.

Maybe you learned that you can enjoy life and still prioritize your health.

Don't leave those lessons behind just because the season changed.

Take them with you.

Your fall routine should build on what you accomplished during the summer—not erase it.

For me, that means taking the movement and consistency I maintained all summer and adding a new level of challenge through heavier lifting and running.

For you, it may look completely different.

And that's okay.

Your journey is yours.

Locked-In Habits - No Negotiations
Angela C. Richardson breaks down how consistency, routine, and non-negotiable habits transform fitness from something you do into who you are.

Protect Your Non-Negotiables

As you build your fall routine, identify the things that matter most.

What are your wellness non-negotiables?

Maybe it's:

  • 🏋🏾‍♀️ Strength training three days a week
  • 🏃🏾‍♀️ Running or cardio twice a week
  • 💧 Drinking enough water
  • 🥗 Planning your meals
  • 😴 Prioritizing sleep and recovery
  • 🚶🏾‍♀️ Getting daily movement
  • 🧘🏾‍♀️ Making time to reset mentally
  • 🙏🏾 Creating time for prayer, meditation, or reflection

You don't have to do everything perfectly.

You just need to know what you are committed to protecting.

Angela C. Richardson explains why proper nutrition, intentional recovery, and balanced energy are just as important as exercise when building a stronger body, mind, and life.

Coach's Challenge: Build Your Fall Routine

This week, take a look at your calendar.

Don't just think about your workouts. Look at your entire life.

Work. Family. Responsibilities. Social events. Rest. Nutrition. Personal time.

Then ask yourself:

“Where does my wellness fit?”

Schedule it.

If your summer routine no longer works, change it.

If your workouts need to be shorter, make them shorter.

If you need more intensity, increase the challenge.

If you need more recovery, give your body what it needs.

But don't change the goal simply because the schedule changed.

Adjust your routine without changing your goals—whether they are long-term or short-term.

Reflection

As we step into this new season, ask yourself:

What needs to change in my routine so I can continue becoming the person I said I wanted to be?

And then remember:

You are not starting over.

You are taking everything you learned from the previous season and using it to move forward.

September is my reset.

I'm lifting heavier. I'm adding running. I'm challenging myself physically. I'm adjusting my routine to match my current goals.

And through it all, my commitment to myself remains the same.

New season. New schedule. Same commitment.

Don't start over.

Reset your routine. Keep your goals. Keep moving forward.
