CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: Off-Duty Atlantic City Fire Captain Tim Schwegman Helps at Margate House Fire
The AC Fire Department tells Atlantic City Focus, that ACFD, Fire Captain, Tim Schwegman was at home when he noticed smoke coming from a nearby Margate residence and that's when Schwegman went into action.

ATLANTIC CITY — Atlantic City Fire Capt. Tim Schwegman was off duty and home with his family on Sept. 26, 2026, when he noticed what appeared to be smoke coming from a nearby residence in Margate.

According to the Atlantic City Fire Department, Schwegman went to investigate and confirmed a structure fire in the 200 block of North Granville Avenue. He immediately notified Margate dispatch and requested a full fire response.

Without turnout gear and initially wearing only a T-shirt and shorts, with no shoes, Schwegman checked for occupants, located the nearest hydrant and relayed critical information to responding firefighters, the department said. He also provided Margate Fire Chief Adams with an initial assessment of the fire conditions.

When crews arrived, Schwegman continued assisting. He helped stretch and position hose lines, retrieved forcible-entry tools, opened a side door for a secondary attack line and later helped pull a water-supply line to the hydrant.

Margate firefighters brought the fire under control. According to the Atlantic City Fire Department, no one was injured, and neighboring homes were protected from damage.

Schwegman credited the Margate crews for their work.

“Margate put the fire out. They did a great job,” Schwegman said. “I was just glad I could help and nobody got hurt. Those guys — I can’t say enough. They did a great job.”

The Atlantic City Fire Department praised Schwegman’s willingness to help while off duty.

“His response reflects the mindset behind the fire service: the responsibility to protect others does not disappear when a shift ends,” the department said in a statement.

Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott K. Evans also commended Schwegman’s actions.

“Captain Schwegman demonstrated the character and commitment we expect from the Atlantic City Fire Department,” Evans said. “He saw a dangerous situation, acted without hesitation and then humbly supported the Margate firefighters who ultimately extinguished the fire. That is service beyond the call.”

The Atlantic City Fire Department also commended Adams and the Margate Fire Department for their swift and professional response.
