CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: Atlantic City Honors Ernest Coursey’s Legacy With City Hall Dedication
Hundreds gathered at Atlantic City City Hall to celebrate the life and public service of Ernest D. Coursey Sr., as city leaders, family members and former New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey marked the one-year anniversary of his passing.
ATLANTIC CITY – Hundreds of people came out on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, to remember and celebrate Ernest D. Cousey, Sr.. Those gathered also endured 80 degree-plus heat and some rain to bear witness to the dedication of The City of Atlantic City's, City Hall to Mayor Marty Small Sr., former Chief of Staff and his service to Atlantic City and New Jersey government.
The unveiling of the signage that recognizes him took place on the South Carolina side, employee entrance. The area was jam packed well into The City Hall parking lot.
Among those attending the ceremony were people who worked with Coursey at City Hall from his time on City Council or any number of city positions including Deputy Mayor or Chief of Staff for current Mayor, Marty Small Sr.
The event also drew attendance from current officials in New Jersey Government such as Assemblyman Don Guardian, and Andrew Parker who served with Coursey as an Atlantic County Commissioner. Also attending was the Rev. Collins A. Days, Days was elected to Coursey's seat on the Atlantic County Commission after Cousey passed away. Former Mayors of Atlantic City could be seen in the crowd as well including Frank Gilliam, Sr. and Lorenzo T. Langford.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was the appearance of former New Jersey Governor, James McGreevey who spoke with passion and excitement about the service of Ernest Coursey. McGreevey also discussed the professional and personal friendship, he and Coursey shared while McGreevy was Governor of New Jersey.
Other speakers included Ernest Coursey's widow Leslie, and Atlantic City Council Vice President Kaleem Shabazz. Those that did speak began to shorten their presentations rains came off and on.
The event ended with the unveiling by Coursey's widow and sons.
