CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: Atlantic City Electric Responds to Jeff Van Drew’s Audit and Refund Demands

ATLANTIC CITY — On Sept. 8, Atlantic City Focus published a Civic Engagement report detailing statements from U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew regarding a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission audit of Atlantic City Electric.

The statements, which were provided by Van Drew’s office, included the congressman’s demand that Atlantic City Electric determine whether customers were overcharged and issue any refunds they may be owed.

On Sept. 15, Atlantic City Focus published a follow-up report after Van Drew’s office released additional statements. The congressman called for greater financial transparency from Atlantic City Electric and demanded the resignation of the entire New Jersey Board of Public Utilities—not Atlantic City Electric employees.

Following publication of those reports, a spokesperson for Atlantic City Electric contacted Atlantic City Focus and provided the following response:

“We care about our customers and are committed to keeping energy costs as low as possible. That’s why we take the findings from the recent FERC audit seriously and are implementing its recommendations to strengthen our processes.

“Based on our initial analysis, following confirmation with FERC staff, any refund for customers would amount to less than two cents per month over a 12-month period. We are continuing to work to finalize the precise refund amount through the compliance process and expect to make a public filing with those details once that process is complete.

“We also promptly notified the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities about the FERC Audit Report and have been transparent about the report findings and impacts.

“As always, we remain focused on delivering the safe, reliable and affordable service our customers expect.”

The utility’s statement represents Atlantic City Electric’s response to Van Drew’s assertions and demands. Atlantic City Focus has not independently determined the amount of any potential refund or the extent to which the audit findings affected individual customers.
