CIVIC ENGAGEMENT-Atlantic City Police Officers Honored for Life-Saving Response After Sergeant Shot in Line of Duty

ATLANTIC CITY – Six Atlantic City police officers were honored for courageous and coordinated actions that helped save the life of Sgt. Christian Ivanov after he was shot and critically injured in the line of duty.

The Atlantic City Police Department presented the 803 Award to Lt. Christopher Lodico, Sgt. Eric O’Neill-Knuttel, Det. Christopher Dodson, Officer Kevin McGloin, Officer Jose Zamorono-Zelidon and Officer Adrian Nunez-Santos for helping ensure Ivanov received urgent, life-saving medical care.

Sgt. Valmir Loga also received a Special Commendation Award for his leadership during the critical incident.

The recognition stems from a June 2, 2026, incident in which Ivanov sustained severe injuries and faced a medical emergency after being shot in the line of duty.

The immediate response of his fellow SWAT team members, combined with specialized treatment provided by the AtlantiCare Trauma Team, was instrumental in getting Ivanov the care he urgently needed.

“The culmination of those officers’ efforts and the quick actions of our city’s medical staff are the absolute reason why this man [Ivanov] is standing with us here today,” Capt. Frank Timek said.

The 803 Award is named in honor of retired Atlantic City Police Officer Josh Vadell. It recognizes ACPD officers who demonstrate exceptional initiative, resilience and dedication to their fellow officers and the Atlantic City community.

Lodico, O’Neill-Knuttel, Dodson, McGloin, Zamorono-Zelidon and Nunez-Santos were honored for their swift response, sound decision-making and unwavering commitment to Ivanov during one of the most serious emergencies faced by the department.

“The collective actions of all the officers and medical team involved in this incident are exemplary and inspire all of us to perform at the highest levels for the betterment of our department,” Timek said. “A sincere congratulations and deserved recognition for your award. On behalf of the Operations Division, thank you for your service.”

Special Commendations were also presented to the doctors and nurses of the AtlantiCare Trauma Team who treated Ivanov at the Trauma Center. Their skill, care and support played an essential role in his recovery.

The award presentation was attended by Vadell, Ivanov, members of the AtlantiCare Trauma Team, ACPD personnel, family members, friends and supporters.
