ATLANTIC CITY — Atlantic City is expanding opportunities for young athletes through a new partnership aimed at introducing girls to sports that have traditionally been out of reach for many families.

Mayor Marty Small Sr., alongside the city’s Recreation Division, announced a new youth sports initiative in partnership with Philadelphia-based nonprofit Eyekonz Sports. The program will provide free lacrosse and field hockey training for Atlantic City girls in grades 3–8, with support from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) office and the Atlantic City Board of Education.

The initiative is designed to go beyond athletics — focusing on mentorship, leadership development, and creating pathways to college scholarships.

“No parent should ever feel there are limited opportunities for their children in the great city of Atlantic City,” Small said. “This initiative represents yet another meaningful investment in our youth, expanding access to new experiences while also creating pathways to college scholarships. Atlantic City families should take full advantage of this program.”

The program will begin with lacrosse, with field hockey expected to follow, and will be offered at no cost to participating families. Organizers say removing financial barriers is key to expanding access to sports that often require significant equipment and club fees.

“We’re excited to bring this opportunity to the young women of Atlantic City,” said Jazmine A. Smith, founder and head coach of Eyekonz Sports. “Lacrosse and field hockey have traditionally been expensive sports to participate in, so offering this program at no cost is truly impactful. Our program has helped student-athletes reach the collegiate level, and we look forward to continuing that track record in Atlantic City.”

Atlantic City Recreation Director Mike Griffin said the initiative reflects the city’s broader commitment to expanding youth programming.

“Our goal is to expand access to sports and activities that many of our youth may not otherwise get to experience,” Griffin said. “This program helps break down barriers and introduces new opportunities beyond traditional offerings. We’re committed to growing this initiative and encourage all eligible families to get involved.”

Programming will take place at the recently renovated Pop Lloyd Stadium, which will serve as the home base for both lacrosse and field hockey activities.

Families interested in enrolling their children were encouraged to attend a parent information meeting held at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School Complex, where registration details and program expectations were shared.

Eyekonz Sports’ mission centers on empowering young athletes through structured development, emphasizing teamwork, discipline, confidence, and academic success while promoting healthy lifestyles and positive self-image.
