Atlantic City Focus Names the Most Important Hip-Hop Artists of the 21st Century
Curated by veteran DJ Ill Nino, Atlantic City Focus’s Black History Month feature spotlights the artists who reshaped hip-hop’s sound, business, and cultural influence since 2000.

Editors Note: As the arts and entertainment editor for Atlantic City Focus, I consulted with several other experts for our Top Ten Hip Hop Artists of The 20th Century. I also knew that since the year 2000 Hip Hop has continued beyond 1999. I also know that I don't personally listen to enough new hip hop so I enlisted the help of DJ and music curated DJ ILL Nino to give his insight on the 5 Most Important Hip Hop Artists since 2000 to Present. Other magazines will have their lists but for our celebration of Black History in the year 2026...this is Atlantic City Focus's list of The Top 5 Most Important Hip Hop Artists since 2000 to present as selected by DJ Ill Nino-Raymond Tyler

I have been DJing for several decades, and I started my career before mixtapes became digital. It was harder to break through in that era. The 21st century saw some artists who achieved success through their work, but they achieved greater success through their own personal achievements. I have played these artists records in clubs, radio sets and parties and I have witnessed their music's impact on audiences.

Kendrick Lamar
The first time I heard Kendrick's good kid, m.A.A.d city I thought it sounded like early Nas music. The artist returned to storytelling which was largely missing in hip hop. He brought his bar bag and quickly became a problem in hip hop. Kendrick creates music which compels listeners to engage with his work. The artist commands admiration from veteran rappers because he demonstrates respect for his musical craft.
Jay-Z
Jay-Z evolved from his street life days into a successful music career and that turned him into a business mogul. The man created new levels of achievement that other rappers could only dream of. All young musicians who have a business plan, a fashion brand and/or a liquor business should pay respect to Hov. He taught the culture that ownership is the real flex.

Drake
Drake controlled the music charts in a way that none of his competitors could match. When you DJ at a party and want to regain control of the crowd, you should play a Drake track. His music spans all emotions because he produces tracks which suit every feeling. He created a new sound which combined rap and R&B that quickly changed the industry, as many started following and copying his musical style.
Lil Wayne
Between 2000 and 2010, Lil Wayne released new verses damn near every week which became popular. His mixtape series transformed the entire music industry. The entire rap music scene today would look different if Wayne had never existed.
Future
Future introduced emotional depth to trap music which audiences never expected from him. The artist produced music which had gritty elements and hypnotic qualities that formed the main sound for almost an entire musical period. I have watched crowds lose their minds to "March Madness" like it’s a national anthem. Future created a lasting impact on music artists through his street sound development.
Nicki Minaj
I remember when Nicki first hit the scene, animated, lyrical, fearless. She outperformed many of her male competitors through her superior rapping skills. She single-handedly established herself as the main female rap artist who led the industry for almost ten years. Most female rappers who enter the microphone space today still carry her music style.
Cardi B
Cardi B's ascent to fame happened because she combined her natural charm with her relentless work ethic. Her genuine personality exists in a way that no one can create through artificial means. The club music scene exploded with excitement when "Bodak Yellow" was released.
Migos
Migos introduced their triplet flow which completely altered the entire music industry. The world wanted to start rapping in their style immediately. Their ad-libs alone could start a party. The cultural impact they created continues to influence society today.
Megan Thee Stallion
Megan entered the music scene with complete confidence, and she demonstrated both her exceptional vocal skills and her strong abilities. When I play her records, the energy in the room changes instantly. She leads the next generation forward with her powerful feminine presence.
After 30 years of spinning records, I can say this without hesitation. These artists didn’t just help shape hip‑hop, they shaped the world around it. They turned hip‑hop into the heartbeat of the 21st century.
