What Are You Reading? Darren Palmer Praises Political Tribes by Amy Chua as Essential Reading for a Divided America
Atlantic City Focus columnist Darren Palmer examines how Political Tribes by Amy Chua explains identity politics, political division, and America’s path toward unity.
Praise for Political Tribes, by Amy Chua.
The "Tiger Mom" gets it right! Chua is a noted Yale University professor, who researches and writes on the topic of achievement, drive and perseverance. To that end, she is a proponent of the "triple package theory" of (cultural) achievement among ethnic groups in America. She co-authored a book by the same name. It too, is a very insightful read.

In Political Tribes, Chua explains the strong pull of group instincts, and why they often act contrary to national and global standards for civility. The author turns her attention globally at first. She sharpens her skills of assessment on the inclinations of major political groups in Afghanistan, Vietnam, Venezuela and terrorist groups before addressing Americas' party extremists. However, Chua distinguishes Americans as the sole "super group" in the world because of our unique ideological identities within the context of one overriding common theme. She explains, with a good deal of optimism, not only why we are divided today, but also our prospects for coming together.
Amy Chua's book challenges people exercising identity politics to be better focused. It is a very important book for those interested in the future of the American ideal. That alone covered my expense.
