Nintendo’s Tomodachi Life Returns: Building Friendships, Love, and Chaos on Your Mii Island
In this review, Lillian Tyler explores how players create friendships, design islands, and navigate Nintendo’s surprising restrictions on sharing custom creations.

On January 29, 2026, Nintendo released their Tomodachi life direct, and revealed so many cute details about the game. Let’s go over some!
Starting off with the basics, players can create a variety of Mii’s based on questions, preexisting ones, or from scratch. When creating from scratch, players can customize every aspect of their Mii including bang toggles, ponytail toggles, eye lashes, eye bags, ear shapes and so much more! If the base level customization isn’t enough, you can draw right on the character to make them more detailed!
Each Mii has their own personality and little quirks that make them unique! They can dance while eating food, aura farm next to a tree, come up with their own catchphrases, toss and turn in bed, have heat flashes, and whatever else they come up with!

They may need a little bit of help making friends with other Mii’s. This is where you come in! Create topics for your Mii’s and place them in the perfect place to strike up a conversation, or bring two Mii’s together through a different Mii. Some will hit it off instantaneously, others not so much. You can even drop them in a place where they can interact with their surroundings.

Mii’s can find the person of their dreams! It can be love at first sight and slowly build up from close relationships. Tread lightly though, your Miis’ hearts may get crushed if someone doesn't like them back, and love triangles can arise.
It’ll be pretty hard for your Mii’s to hang out together if the island is pretty bland. So, you might have to pull out some Animal Crossing or Sims building skills! The island will continuously grow as more residents move in, and you will be able to change the entire layout of the island by going to Quick Build. This shop allows you to buy a variety of items spanning from plants, benches, fireplaces, lights, fences, and more, that can make your island as aesthetic as you please. If you don’t like the placement of a certain building, you can just move it!

You can also decorate Mii’s homes by purchasing stunning furniture sets from T&C Reno! Create anything you want from cozy reading nooks to a supermarket. Mii’s can also help you decorate their island with their special ideas, which can take some pressure off of builders if they choose to follow them.
There’s also other stores to shop from on your island. For instance, Fresh Kingdom allows players to experience inflation in real time! You can pay $60 at Fresh Kingdom for a crab or wait for some other deals to spring up. You can also go down to the Marketplace and get some mystery bags that hold interesting stuff. Can’t go to the store looking crusty though. Make sure your Mii’s outfits are right and tight at Where & Wear! Model a cute dress, an egg outfit, and even a hotdog suit. Personally, my Mii’s outfit of the day is the hotdog costume.

Palette House is the best shop for creative minds to flourish because you can practically make anything you want. This includes TV shows, clothes, latte art, houses, and the dog you’ve always wanted! You can even change the building designs on your island to make them fit any theme you want. The possibilities are endless!

Not every Nintendo direct is perfect though. Nintendo has stated that custom designs are not shareable online. According to nintendolife writer Alana Hughes, the game has heavily restricted sharing features to the point players will not be able to take designs off the Nintendo Switch console. You can only share designs locally with friends and family members and these designs can’t leave their islands.
Although the restrictive sharing features is a major bummer for many Tomodachi fans, I believe Nintendo is doing this because of the vast majority of customization in the game. If they allow people to easily share their designs, the game can become a safety concern since it is really easy for people to create odd things, and many players may put personal information in their islands. So, though it is very disappointing, the restrictions make sense.
