Melanated Cares Foundation Builds Safe Spaces Through Camp Empowerment Programs

What began as a celebration of Black joy in the outdoors has evolved into a deeper mission of healing and empowerment. The team behind Melanated Campout—founded by Shunte’ McClellan, Jocelyn McCants, and Cayela Wimberly White—created the Melanated Cares Foundation to extend that sense of connection beyond camping season.

Camp Empower Her

Camp Empower Her launched in June 2025, welcoming 21 girls in the juvenile system for a weekend of growth and transformation. Many didn’t want to attend at first—but by Sunday, they didn’t want to leave. Through workshops, mentorship, and shared experiences, they learned to see themselves beyond their circumstances.

Next Up: Camp Empower Him
The next step comes this fall with Camp Empower Him, set for November 15–16, 2025, in Georgia. About 20–25 boys, ages 13–17, many from the juvenile justice system, will gather for a weekend centered on brotherhood, guidance, and joy.

The camp blends fun with purpose—fostering self-esteem, leadership, and healing through team-building activities and mentorship. “We want these young men to feel loved and have fun,” says founder Shunte’ McClellan. “They don’t always get to be kids. We want them surrounded by men who look like them—men they can look up to and be proud of.”

The Bigger Picture:
Each initiative reflects Melanated Campout’s belief that healing happens both intentionally and organically. “We feel a responsibility to make sure people feel safe, enjoy themselves, and leave rejuvenated,” McClellan says.
