Full Repaving of Pacific Avenue Announced
Mayor Small and NJDOT Expand Atlantic City’s Infrastructure Improvements

ATLANTIC CITY — Another major roadway in Atlantic City is getting a full facelift.
Mayor Marty Small Sr., joined by officials from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), announced on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, that Pacific Avenue will be completely repaved as part of the city’s ongoing effort to modernize its infrastructure and improve travel safety for residents and visitors.

“Under the Small Administration, relationships matter — and our strong partnership with state agencies like NJDOT is delivering real results for the people of the Great City of Atlantic City,” Small said. “This is a historic moment because, for the first time in a very long time, residents and visitors alike will experience newly paved roads through the main arteries of our great city. No previous administration has made this level of progress in such a short time.”

The project will also include synchronized traffic lights along both Pacific and Atlantic Avenues to improve traffic flow through the heart of the resort. The mayor added that these grants are not just about new pavement but about transforming Atlantic City’s infrastructure and enhancing public safety.

A total of $5.3 million in state and federal grant funding has been awarded to support several city projects.
The funding includes:
- $1.08 million for repaving Pacific Avenue from Connecticut to North Carolina avenues
- $3.5 million for repaving from North Carolina to Indiana avenues and from Hartford to Arkansas Avenue
- $684,708 for new pedestrian sidewalks connecting Atlantic City High School and Chelsea Heights, a key safety improvement for students and families.

NJDOT Commissioner Highlights City’s Importance
NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor said improving Pacific Avenue has been a priority for Governor Phil Murphy’s administration.

“The revitalization of Pacific Avenue has been a priority for Governor Murphy, and now that the signal synchronization is under contract, it’s important to repave this major corridor from Maine Avenue to Albany Avenue,” O’Connor said. “This is the gateway to the casino resorts, hotels, businesses, and the famed Boardwalk. Building a walkway to link Atlantic City High School to the city is an important safety improvement.”
Major Roadwork Underway Across the City
Across Atlantic City, more than $25 million in infrastructure projects are now active. Work includes the repaving of Atlantic Avenue, Baltic Avenue, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and Tennessee Avenue.
Last month, City Council awarded South State Inc. a contract to repave Atlantic Avenue from Tennessee to Albany avenues — a project that also includes safety and beautification upgrades. Pre-paving work is set to begin this month.
South State Inc. is also handling the Pacific Avenue Signal Optimization Project, which will synchronize 35 traffic signals along the corridor. As part of that effort, new fiber-optic cable is being installed before paving begins. The latest NJDOT grant funding will now allow the city to finish the entire repaving of Pacific Avenue.
More Improvements to Come
Baltic Avenue is currently being repaved from Maine to North Carolina avenues, with the next phase extending to Missouri Avenue. The city is also seeking additional NJDOT support to complete the final segment, which becomes Fairmount Avenue at Missouri.
Repaving work also began last week on both sides of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, stretching from Route 30to Mediterranean Avenue. With major roadway projects underway across every corner of Atlantic City, Mayor Small said the work reflects his administration’s ongoing commitment to “moving the city forward — one street at a time.”
