From Checks and Balances to Blind Allegiance: America at a Crossroads

From Checks and Balances to Blind Allegiance: America at a Crossroads

We, as Americans, have always been proud of the check-and-balance government we have. A teacher once said to my class that the way our government was established, we could never have anything like Adolf Hitler. He added that our government was what made us the greatest country in the world. I wonder what he would have to say now.

There have been people that have said that Donald Trump was trying to be a dictator.  For all intents and purposes, he is a dictator. If those who hold the positions that are supposed to ensure the checks-and-balances are just following along like little church mice, the check-and-balance government, of which we have been so proud, becomes non-existent. Even the Supreme Court seems to be just sitting there waiting to vote any way the president wants them to (what is best for the country doesn’t appear to be a consideration).

I have been following national politics for a long time. I have never seen anything like this. In an odd way, it reminds me of the Civil War. Instead of North versus South, it is Democrat versus Republican. One big difference between the two eras is in the Civil War both sides were fighting for what the country should be in their minds. Now, it seems like very few people are interested in the country.

The aftermath of the recent murder of Charlie Kirk has shown how incredibly separated we are. It also shows that we haven’t made anywhere near the progress in race relations that many of us thought we had. So many Americans had no problem with hate-filled, vial rhetoric that Kirk spewed. However, several prominent people get fired for speaking out against Kirk’s rhetoric. Kirk’s comments are protected even though they are divisive and untrue. Yet, the comments of others like Jimmie Kimmel aren’t.
