Chief Rod Aluise Atlantic City Lifeguard Classic Celebrates Shore Tradition and Lifesaving Excellence
Beach patrols from across South Jersey competed in the newly renamed Atlantic City classic, honoring a legendary chief while showcasing elite ocean rescue skills.
ATLANTIC CITY — Beach patrols from across the Jersey Shore gathered on the Atlantic City beachfront Friday to compete in the Chief Rod Aluise Atlantic City Lifeguard Classic, showcasing the speed, endurance and teamwork that define one of South Jersey's premier lifeguard competitions.
Athletes tested their rescue skills in a variety of events, including surfboat races, swimming, paddleboard competitions, relays and beach sprints. Each event reflected the physical conditioning, coordination and split-second decision-making required of the lifeguards who safeguard area beaches throughout the summer.
This year's competition marked the first race under its new name, the Chief Rod Aluise Atlantic City Lifeguard Classic, honoring the longtime Atlantic City Beach Patrol chief for his years of leadership and service to the profession.
Spectators lined the shoreline as competitors powered through the surf, raced across the sand and battled for every second in closely contested events. While the races featured plenty of spirited competition, they also demonstrated the camaraderie and mutual respect shared among the region's beach patrols.
Originally established in 1991 during the Atlantic City Beach Patrol's 100th anniversary celebration, the annual classic has become one of the Shore's signature lifeguard competitions, celebrating the proud tradition of ocean rescue and the dedicated men and women who protect beachgoers every summer.
