The Atlantic City School District in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA, observed International Mother Language Daywith a special program. On Friday morning, February 20, an event titled International Mother Language Day was held at Atlantic City High School, featuring a discussion forum, prose readings, poetry recitations, and a distinguished gathering.

The program began with a one-minute moment of silence to honor the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.

Speakers at the event included New Jersey State Assemblywoman Maureen Rowan, Atlantic City High School Principal Dr. Constance Chapman-Days, Atlantic City Councilman-at-Large Sohel Ahmed, Atlantic City School Board member Subrata Chowdhury, President of the Bangladesh Association of South Jersey Zahirul Islam Babul, and Board of Trustees President Abdur Rafiq.

In their remarks, the speakers paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement and praised the school district’s efforts to promote respect for linguistic diversity within its multicultural community. They emphasized the importance of encouraging students from different language backgrounds to embrace, preserve, and take pride in their mother tongues.

The Atlantic City community celebrates Interntational Mother Language Day. In 1999, the 30th General Assembly of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced that Feb. 21, would be proclaimed as International Mother Language Day.

During the program, students and teachers from Atlantic City High School representing various linguistic communities presented prose and poetry in their respective native languages.

The event was jointly hosted by Midhat Siddiqi and Javon Jones.
