What’s Happening Now

Crews have begun removing concrete to prepare foundations for new light poles, with installation expected later this month. Roadway milling and paving through the heart of Atlantic City is anticipated before the end of spring.

Motorists should expect temporary detours and shifting traffic patterns along Atlantic Avenue and nearby side streets. Officials emphasized that disruptions will be limited to active construction zones rather than the entire corridor at once.

A Long-Planned Investment

The final phase follows months of planning and coordination. The project went out to bid in August 2025, with a contract awarded to South State, Inc. in September.

Since then, the city has worked with the State of New Jersey and Atlantic City Electric to finalize a tariff agreement that will shift responsibility for corridor lighting operations to the utility provider — a move expected to generate long-term savings for taxpayers.

“This project is the result of a strong partnership between our city, state, and federal partners,” said Mayor Marty Small Sr. “The finish line is now within reach, and we look forward to the day Atlantic Avenue is fully completed.”

City Engineer Uzo Ahiarakwe said the project is now positioned to move forward efficiently.

“Our team is committed to completing this project in a timely manner while minimizing disruptions for residents, businesses, and visitors,” Ahiarakwe said.

What the Project Delivers

The Atlantic Avenue Improvement Project includes a comprehensive set of upgrades designed to improve safety, accessibility, and mobility along the corridor.

Key improvements include:

  • Traffic signal synchronization
  • New and upgraded lighting
  • High-visibility crosswalks
  • ADA-compliant ramps
  • Surveillance cameras
  • Streetscape and beautification enhancements

Officials say these upgrades will not only improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety but also strengthen economic development opportunities along Atlantic Avenue.

Funding Breakdown

The $17.6 million final phase is supported by:

  • $10.3 million from the Federal Highway Administration
  • Additional funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation
  • City of Atlantic City contributions

An earlier phase, completed in 2023, included paving, restriping, lighting upgrades, and fiber infrastructure from Maine Avenue to Tennessee Avenue.

Why This Matters to Atlantic City

Atlantic Avenue serves as one of the city’s primary commercial and transportation corridors. Completing this project positions the corridor for safer travel, improved business activity, and a more modern, visitor-friendly experience.
