ATLANTIC CITY — Local youth from the Great Day Summer Camp got a chance to experience the new $100-million Island Waterpark on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Mayor Marty Small Sr. and Showboat Atlantic City owner Bart Blatstein teamed up to make it happen.

“The mayor thought it would be a good idea to have the campgoers at the water park, so I agreed because we’re part of the Atlantic City family here, and it’s the right thing to do,” Blatstein said in a prepared statement. “They all seemed to really be enjoying the experience, and the Mayor and I are already discussing similar events.”

The 120,000-square-foot water park opened on July 4. The Great Day Summer Camp is run through a collaboration between the Atlantic City Youth Services and Atlantic City Recreation departments. Both departments are already working on fall youth programs.

“For us to give the kids this opportunity feels awesome,” said Atlantic City Recreation Director Michael Griffin. “We thank Bart Blatstein for welcoming us and giving these kids this chance, and Mayor Small for his continued support of our youth.”

Small joined the campers for their free morning at the water park and took pictures with many. This is the second year of free summer programming for Atlantic City youth, Small said.

“This is a great way to celebrate a successful summer program and have a little fun before the summer ends,” said Director of Atlantic City Youth Services Christina Noble. “We’re just happy to give these kids this opportunity they may not have otherwise had.”
