Hindu Believers to Celebrate Religious Holiday in AC

ATLANTIC CITY — Members of the Hindu community who are devoted to Lord Krishna will hold their equivalent of Christmas on Sept. 6, of the Hindu religious holiday Janmashtami, a public celebration.

Community leaders Subrata Chowdhury and Sumon Mazumder, of the Asian- American Society of Atlantic City, invited Krishna devotees to the celebration at 1411 Penrose Avenue in Atlantic City from 6 p.m. to approximately 12:01 p.m. on Sept. 7.

“Just as Christmas marks the birth of Lord Jesus Christ, Janmashtami marks the appearance of Lord Krishna,” said Chowdhury. “It is celebrated by Hindus throughout the world.”

The program, being promoted by the Asian American Society of Atlantic City, will include a religious talent show for children, a Krishna quiz and a cake cutting ceremony at midnight on Sept. 6. Adhibas, a ritual performed the day before a marriage, Krishna Puja, a Vedic ritual of saying prayers and making offerings to seek the blessings of Lord Krishna and reciting from the Holy Gita, a sacred Hindu scripture, are among the activities scheduled during the celebration.

According to Vedic scriptures, Lord Krishna, revered as the Supreme God of all gods in the material world, appeared as the eighth son of Devaki, his mother, and Vasudev, his father, in the Mathura District of Uttar Pradesh, India.

“Those Hindus who are devotees of Krishna, revere him as the Supreme Lord who appeared to dispel evil from the Earth and spread the message of love and brotherhood,” Chowdhury said. “This is the day devotees celebrate his beautiful pastimes, his presence in their lives, taking time to remember their eternal loving relationship with him and his presence within all of our hearts.”
