Three Cumberland County and two Cape May County housing authorities were recently among 54 neighborhoods included in $3.16 billion in grant funding awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Bridgeton, Vineland and Millville will receive funding in Cumberland County. The Cape May and Wildwood housing authorities will receive funding in Cape May County. Each will receive portions of HUD’s Capital Fund Program’s award.

“As I have traveled the country, I’ve heard time and again from families and seniors in public housing that a decent home in a safe community shouldn’t be too much to ask for,” said HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “With this investment today, we are committing to work with our public housing authority partners to guarantee homes in public housing are worthy of the families and individuals who live there.”

According to HUD, the goal of the award, which is being shared across public housing authorities in all 50 states, is to make public housing safer.

Bridgeton will receive $1,237,208. Vineland’s housing authority will receive $601,707, and Millville’s housing authority will receive $1,135,232.

In Cape May County, the Cape May housing authority will receive $209,226, and the Wildwood housing authority will receive $451,995.

According to a Feb. 17, prepared statement, the FHA hopes the funding will lead to large-scale improvements, such as roof-replacements, and energy-efficient upgrades to heating systems.
