AC Woman becomes First Female to Lead Public Works Department
Crystal Lewis became the resort’s first female Director of the Department of Public Works on Jan. 5, in a ceremony at the Public Works yard.
ATLANTIC CITY—Crystal Lewis was 14 years old when she started work for the City of Atlantic City as part of the Atlantic City Mayor’s youth program.
She became the resort’s first female Director of the Department of Public Works on Jan. 5, in a ceremony at the Public Works yard.
“I’m excited to finally be able to put my fingerprints on this department and set my thoughts and ideas into motion as director of Public Works,” said Lewis. “The people of Atlantic City can rest assured that any decision I make will be with the city’s best interest in mind and I will handle any issues and complaints that come my way in a fair and aggressive manner.”
Lewis had served as assistant director of Public Works for the past seven years. She has worked in various positions throughout her career of more than 30 years including serving in the Engineering Department, Vital Statistics and the Division of Planning.
“Crystal is a true example of upward mobility in the workplace at its finest,” said Mayor Marty Small Sr. “Her career with the city started under Mayor James Usry, Atlantic City’s first Black Mayor, and continues today as the leader of Public Works under my administration.”
