AC Wins $200K Grant for Road Safety Improvements
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the funds are part of an $800 million announcement made on Feb. 1, that includes 510 projects across the country ranging from sidewalk and crosswalk improvements to redesigned roads.
ATLANTIC CITY — The resort will receive a $200,000 grant to study possible road improvements through the U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, in a prepared statement, that the grant program will fund various projects ranging from sidewalk and crosswalk improvements to redesigned roads.
Mayor Marty Small, Sr., said the grant funds will help his administration address well known resident concerns.
“We’ve been hearing Atlantic City residents ask for road safety improvements during City Council and CitiStat meetings and this grant will help us address that all too important issue,” said Small. “Now not only do we have the funding for well-planned solutions, but this money also prequalifies the city for construction dollars.”
The funds are part of an $800 million announcement made on Feb. 1, that includes 510 projects across the country. The competitive grant program was created by President Joe Biden’s infrastructure law that provides $5 billion over the course of five years for regional, local and tribal initiatives.
“Every year, crashes cost tens of thousands of American lives and hundreds of billions of dollars to our economy,” said Buttigieg. “We face a national emergency on our roadways, and it demands urgent action.”
The SS4A grant will award 473 action plan grants and 37 implementation grants. Atlantic City and Cape May were the only two municipalities in the area to receive funding.
“Traffic safety has always been a priority of the Small administration,” Small said.
